The Super Mario Bros. Movie has achieved yet another significant achievement by surpassing the $500 million mark in revenue at the North American box office.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film based on the Nintendo game has joined the exclusive group of only four movies to generate more than $500 million in revenue during the pandemic period. The other three movies that have achieved this milestone are Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.1 million), Top Gun: Maverick ($718.7 million), and Avatar: The Way of Water ($683.9 million).
On a global scale, in addition to being the tenth animated film to ever surpass $1 billion in box office revenue, the movie has made headlines as the first movie of 2023 to cross this milestone globally.
VGC also states that, as of now, the film co-produced by Illumination and Nintendo is the highest-grossing movie of 2023, with the second and third place in terms of revenue held by Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and John Wick: Chapter 4, respectively.
Other notable feats achieved by the movie include becoming the first Illumination and Universal animated title to surpass $500 million at the US box office, while also being Universal's third highest-grossing release of all time, coming in after Jurassic World and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Moreover, it currently holds the distinction of being the second highest-grossing animated movie ever released in the US.
