Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan depicts the early years of the Meiji Restoration in Tokyo, with the protagonist Himura Kenshin being a skilled assassin known as "Hitokiri Battosai" during the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. After vowing to never kill again, he travels the land with a reverse-blade sword. One day, he is mistaken for the "fake Battosai" by Kaoru Kamiya, the owner of a kendo dojo, and ends up staying there. Through his time at the dojo, Kenshin makes friends and discovers the true meaning of the sword.
