The popular manga series Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan, created by Nobuhiro Watsuki, has been re-adapted into a new TV anime of the same name. The third trailer for the series was released during the recent Anime Japan 2023 event, and it has been confirmed that the anime will premiere in July of this year.
The new Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan will utilize the latest animation technology to reimagine the original story from the first episode, with the aim of recreating the series in a way that could appeal to current anime fans. Production of the anime will involve director Hideyo Yamamoto, writer Hideyuki Kurata, and the original author Nobuhiro Watsuki.
Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan depicts the early years of the Meiji Restoration in Tokyo, with the protagonist Himura Kenshin being a skilled assassin known as "Hitokiri Battosai" during the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. After vowing to never kill again, he travels the land with a reverse-blade sword. One day, he is mistaken for the "fake Battosai" by Kaoru Kamiya, the owner of a kendo dojo, and ends up staying there. Through his time at the dojo, Kenshin makes friends and discovers the true meaning of the sword.
