As we all know, the main source of revenue for online game stores like Steam and the Epic Games Store comes from the revenue split of game sales. However, recently, Epic Games has introduced a new exclusive plan called "First Run", aiming to attract more game developers to release their new games exclusively on the Epic Games Store.
According to the official description, the Epic First Run program is primarily targeted at third-party developers, who only need to make their new games (released starting from October 16) exclusively available on the Epic Games Store. In return, all the net revenue generated during the first six months of the game's release will be 100% attributed to the developer. After that initial six months, the revenue model will revert to Epic Store's standard 12% revenue share.
While it is tempting for developers to retain all net revenue during the first half-year, the success of this initiative remains to be seen. After all, adopting an exclusive strategy could potentially lead to losing a portion of players who are unwilling to switch platforms.
