MPL Malaysia S12 Week 4 Recap: Team SMG Dethrones Selangor Red Giants

MPL Malaysia S12 Week 4 Recap: Team SMG Dethrones Selangor Red Giants

When kings battle, the earth trembles. Week 4 #MingguDiraja (Royal Week) of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League Malaysia (MPL MY) Regular Season lived up to its billing, with the clashes between the league's kings reverberating throughout the Land of Dawn. After Week 4, Team SMG sits on the throne with 15 points, followed by HomeBois, RSG MY, and Selangor Red Giants on joint-second with 14 points apiece. Team HAQ stay fifth with 11 points.

A Majestic Turnout For #MingguDiraja

The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) community came together over Minggu Diraja to set two new records. According to Esports Charts, the match between TODAK and HomeBois on Week 4, Day 2 (#SeruSaturday) was watched by more than 166,000 Peak Concurrent Viewers (PCV)*, the highest all season, eclipsing even the 143,000 PCV* set by this season's opener between TODAK and Team SMG.

Note: the PCV figures only include viewers on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube; they do not include viewers on TV broadcast channels such as on Astro Arena.

Additionally, Minggu Diraja saw more than 3,000 fans show up in person at new MPL arena in Dewan Sri Putra. This represents the higest turnout in Season 12 so far, as well as being more than 50% higher than the highest recorded attendance in the Season 11 Regular Season (2,000 fans in Week 4).

The Cost Of Team SMG's Throne

Team SMG usurped Selangor Red Giants after securing four points in Week 4 – more than Selangor Red Giants' sole point obtained this week. However, this came at the cost of Team SMG's perfect record in Season 12 after their defeat to RSG MY (1-2).

Team SMG had HomeBois to thank for their successful coup over Selangor Red Giants. HomeBois edged Selangor Red Giants (2-1) in a closely fought match before continuing their winning streak by beating defending champions, TODAK. HomeBois' feats will have earned them the reputation for being kingslayers – just like RSG MY. It was a great weekend for HomeBois on international grounds too, with Homebois SG kicking off their MPL SG journey with two crucial victories over Alchemy SG (2-0) and Bleed Esports (2-1).

In contrast, TODAK had another challenging weekend after two sets of 0-2 losses set them back into joint-seventh place. Last season's champions now have a win-loss ratio of 1:5. TODAK will be especially wary of Team Secret, who came from behind to notch their first win in MPL MY over RED Esports (2-1).

Week 4 Results:

  • Day 1 (Friday)
    • Selangor Red Giants 1 – 2 HomeBois
    • Team SMG 2 – 0 Red Esports
  • Day 2 (Seru Saturday)
    • Team Lunatix 0 – 2 MPX NSEA
    • TODAK 0 – 2 HomeBois
    • RSG MY 2 – 0 Team Secret
  • Day 3 (Sunday)
    • TODAK 0 – 2 Team HAQ
    • RSG MY 2 – 1 Team SMG
    • Red Esports 1 – 2 Team Secret

Week 5 Preview: Hari Malaysia Special Programme

Week 5 will have an extra-special programme to commemorate Hari Malaysia (Malaysia Day). In the spirit of togetherness and community, Week 5 will feature local icons to celebrate our pride for our nation and our MI5I Malaysia mission—to bring the #pantangmengalah spirit to the international arena—at the global Mobile Legends: Bang Bang M5 World Championship 2023.

MPL MY's very own icon, TODAK, will open the action against MPX NSEA. While they may have represented the nation at some of MLBB's most prestigious international events, TODAK's focus will be on securing a positive result so they can arrest their current form. This will be especially important before they go up against RSG MY on Day 2.

Team HAQ will have two high-stakes battles awaiting them – against currently league leaders, Team SMG, on Day 1, followed by the old league leaders, Selangor Red Giants, on Day 3. Victory will propel them right into the title mix and go a long way to reaffirming their ambitions. But neither will be easy opponents, with Team SMG hoping to extend their lead at the top of the table and Selangor Red Giants looking to rebuild their momentum.
