Square Enix has released the first trailer for their upcoming game Symbiogenesis. The game is based on blockchain technology and is being promoted as "narrative-unlocked NFT entertainment." The trailer hints that the game will feature a high-fantasy theme, as it showcases a floating continent with magical locations and a massive World Tree. However, further details about the game's mechanics and storyline have yet to be revealed.
According to Square Enix, Symbiogenesis will feature 10,000 NFT characters with unique designs representing different races and professions, and players will be able to use these characters' images as their social media profile pictures.
Players in Symbiogenesis will progress through the main story and complete missions while also uncovering the stories behind the characters. They will also have to find hidden items scattered throughout the Floating Continent, and ultimately, participate in a World Mission where they will make a final choice that determines the ending of the game's narrative.
Square Enix also mentioned that players can complete all story chapters of Symbiogenesis without owning any Character NFT. However, these NFT purchases will come with additional in-game benefits, such as unique storylines, easier EXP gains, the ability to create a replica of their character, and additional NFT art when missions are cleared.
First announced during November 2022, the game has since received mixed reactions from players. Despite Square Enix being committed to the creation of blockchain and NFT games, the gaming community has been critic of the use of the technology, largely due to its ecological impacts, and that it seems to only add to the microtransactional aspect of gaming. Players could check out the game's official site for more details.
