On September 5, 2023, after multiple court hearings following the first public trial at the Kyoto District Court on the tragic arson attack that occurred on July 18, 2019, at Kyoto Animation's Studio 1 building, which resulted in 36 deaths and 32 injuries, the court officially declared the accused, Shinji Aoba, guilty and sentenced him to death.
The Kyoto District Court determined that the defendant, at the time of the incident, was not mentally incapacitated, nor did he suffer from any mental disorders, indicating full legal responsibility. Therefore, the Kyoto District Court officially declared the charges of arson and murder against Shinji Aoba as valid.
