Sega has officially revealed the previously announced mobile game as 404 GAME RE:SET. Developed in collaboration with creative director Yoko Taro, the game is aimed to release in spring 2023.
Localization in multiple languages is currently ongoing, meaning that the game will be published around the world. As of now, the game is open for pre-registration, despite gameplay details yet to be announced.
According to the game’s latest showcase video, the game is set in a world reigned supreme by Sega, thanks to the power of CAST — a group of anime girls transformed from Sega games (personification of video games, yes you heard that right).
In order to restore the world’s order, players involve themselves in the war, assisted by CAST such as Sega’s arcade games After Burner, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop, and Out Run. One interesting thing to note is that producer Gosuke Nakamura also revealed that other than Sega’s IP, there will also be “games” from other companies involved in the war.
Yoko Taro expressed that the idea for 404 GAME RE:SET came from the conception of “what if Sega is an evil company?” He believed that this game will be unlike any other mainstream game, and said that he would be elated if people’s reaction towards the game is “why did Sega make an innovative but unprofitable game?”
