The light novel Spice and Wolf, written by Japanese author Isuna Hasekura, received the Silver Award at the 12th Dengeki Novel Prize and ranked first in the guide book This Light Novel is Amazing! 2007. It was also adapted into an anime series with the first and second seasons airing between 2008 and 2009.
After 15 years, it was officially announced that a new anime adaptation of the novel, titled Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf, is in the works. Today, the officials have released the anime's first trailer and visual poster, as well as announcing that the anime will feature returning voice cast members.
Spice and Wolf sets itself apart from typical fantasy novels that focus on swords and magic, that it emphasizes the theme of economics. The story follows the traveling merchant Kraft Lawrence, who travels to various places to buy and sell goods. While visiting the village of Pasloe, he discovers a sleeping girl in a cart filled with wheat. The girl is a beautiful young woman with wolf ears and a tail, who introduces herself as Holo, the Wolf Goddess of the Harvest. Although he is skeptical about her claim of being a harvest deity, he agrees to have her join him on his journey.
