MPL MY Season 12 Regular Season Week 1 Recap: Reigning Champions Outshone by Rivals

MPL MY Season 12 Regular Season Week 1 Recap: Reigning Champions Outshone by Rivals

The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League Malaysia (MPL MY) got off to a flying start over the weekend. The opening match of Season 12's Regular Season set a new record for Peak Concurrent Viewers (PCV), with the match between TODAK and Team SMG garnering more than 143,000 PCV, higher than any previous season's opener, according to Esports Charts. This represents a 33% increase over the Season 11 opening match, which had 93,000 PCV.

Additionally, more than 2,900 fans turned up at the new MPL arena in Dewan Sri Putra in Week 1 to support their teams, a 60% increase from last season's Week 1. This season, fans will be able to enjoy the on-site MPL MY experience for free—all are welcome!

Week 1 Results: Reigning Champions Struggle

Season 11 champions, TODAK, begin their title defence in unconvincing fashion, losing the season opener against Team SMG 1-2. TODAK rallied to comprehensively beat Team Secret 2-0 on Day 3. However, they ended Week 1 in 4th place, with rivals Selangor Red Giants (1st), HomeBois (2nd), and Team HAQ (3rd) sitting above them. With only one match awaiting TODAK in Week 2, their chances of climbing up the table do not look promising.

Current table-toppers, Selangor Red Giants, will be one to watch in the coming season, having obtained a perfect Week 1 after two clean sweeps over Team Lunatix and Red Esports. Based on their initial two matches, their imported players, Jon "Super Red" Bordeos and Archie "Pancake" Guevarra Jr, look to be integral members of the team, with the former already having been named MVP Of The Match against Team Lunatix.

At the other end of the table, three teams sit on zero points—Red Esports, Team Lunatix, and Team Secret. While all three will be looking to improve on Week 1's results, the pressure will be on Team Secret especially, given that their losses this weekend—to Team HAQ (0-2) and TODAK (0-2)—have extended their lose-streak to 11, the longest in MPL MY history.

Week 1 Results:

  • Day 1 (Friday)
    • TODAK 1 – 2 Team SMG
    • Team Secret 0 – 2 Team HAQ
  • Day 2 (Saturday)
    • Selangor Red Giants 2 – 0 Team Lunatix
    • Team RSG 1 – 2 HomeBois
    • Team HAQ 2 – 1 MPX NSEA
  • Day 3 (Sunday)
    • HomeBois 2 – 0 Team Lunatix
    • Red Esports 0 – 2 Selangor Red Giants
    • Team Secret 0 – 2 TODAK

The Competition Heats Up In Week 2

Season 12 of the MPL MY Regular Season will resume with Week 2, taking place from this Friday to Sunday (25 to 27 August). The Team SMG versus HomeBois match on Seru Saturday (26 Aug) will be especially intense, being a rematch of the Season 11 Lower Bracket Finals, which saw Team SMG emerge victorious.

In Week 2, Malaysia's top 10 Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) teams will continue their battle for the right to carry out the MI5I Malaysia mission of bringing #pantangmengalah spirit to the global arena by representing the nation at the MLBB M5 World Championship 2023.
