In 2020, former Blizzard employees Tim Morton, Tim Campbell, and others established a studio called Frost Giant, focusing on the development of a new RTS game titled Stormgate. While the game was revealed back in 2022, only a few gameplay screenshots had been unveiled. One year later, the development team unveiled a brand new video at today's Gamescom 2023 ONL, featuring additional in-game footage.
Stormgate is set in a future hundreds of years from now, where Earth is overrun by rampant extraterrestrial invaders relentlessly trying to seize complete control of it. In these dire times, the remaining survivors have rallied together, reigniting the spark of hope and uniting to defend the Earth. The game is divided into two factions: the demonic Infernal Host and Earth's defenders. Each faction must gather resources, constructs bases, and command armies in battles that will determine the ultimate outcome.
Players can engage in 1v1 ladder matches, dueling fiercely against opponents from around the world. In co-op mode, team up with friends to battle AI enemies. The game also offers an editor, allowing all players to freely craft their ideal gaming experience.
Furthermore, in order to make RTS games more accessible to a wider audience, Stormgate has incorporated streamlined input controls, automatic unit assignments, and other simplified controls. However, the developers assure that even with a lowered learning curve, the game's difficulty will still cater to all players who enjoy a challenge.
Of noteworthy mention, the game is confirmed to be a free-to-play title. This ensures that all players can experience the essence and enjoyment of RTS gameplay, even without spending a penny. Furthermore, there will not be any pay-to-win elements, as the aim is to provide the most equal gameplay experience.
