According to an exclusive report by Entertainment Weekly, after the successful release of their debut film Nimona, Annapurna Animation is currently preparing for a new film project, which involves adapting the third-person adventure game Stray, developed by the French game developer BlueTwelve Studio, into an animated film.
"It's a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there's such a hilarious dynamic. So, there's comedy inherent in this, but there's not one human being in this movie. I think it's one of the reasons why the game was incredibly popular, that you are seeing the world through the point of view of an adorable cat," says Robert Baird, head of Annapurna Animation, in the interview with Entertainment Weekly.
He then added, "How did they pull that off, and how are we going to pull that off in the movie? We will, even though sometimes it feels impossible, but we know that's the essence of the game and the key to telling the story."
Baird also mentioned that when adapting the game into a movie, the creators are trying to capture "something so emotional". BlueTwelve describes the game as having a "hopepunk" vibe, which is "a narrative concept where optimism is a form of resistance". Personally, Baird also likes the term "hopepunk", and if they can successfully bring this adaptation to life, it would be the "first and greatest hopepunk movie".
