During the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2023), Apple revealed the new Game Mode feature for macOS 14 Sonoma, their upcoming operating system, which aims to optimize gaming performance on Mac devices.
Game Mode is a feature designed to optimize gaming performance on the macOS 14 Sonoma. It ensures that the computer's GPU and CPU prioritize the game being played, while minimizing the resources allocated to background applications. The main goal is to enhance the gaming experience by allowing games to run at higher fidelity and smoother framerates.
Furthermore, by doubling the Bluetooth sampling rate, Game Mode will significantly reduce the latency for audio devices, resulting in a more synchronized and immersive auditory experience for gaming. Additionally, game controllers such as PlayStation's DualSense and Microsoft's Xbox controllers, when connected via Bluetooth, will also benefit from reduced input latency, providing "in-game responsiveness you can really feel".
Then there's the brand new Metal Game Porting Toolkit, which streamlines the process of porting games from other platforms to the macOS, significantly reducing development time by expediting evaluation process, enabling developers to assess their game's performance on Mac within days rather than weeks or months. Additionally, the toolkit provides simplified procedures for converting shaders and graphics code, making it easier for developers to adapt their games to the macOS.
Renowned Japanese video game producer Hideo Kojima also made an appearance during the presentation, announcing that the highly acclaimed game, Death Stranding: Director's Cut, would be making its way to Mac later in 2023, simultaneously expressing his appreciation for Apple's continuous commitment to the gaming industry. Kojima further disclosed that his team at Kojima Productions is actively engaged in bringing their upcoming titles to Apple platforms.
As a result of these new features of the macOS 14 Sonoma, it seems that players can expect a significant increase in the release of AAA games on the Mac platform in the near future.
