VGC and Eurogamer sources reveal that Nintendo's upcoming next-gen console is scheduled for a second-half 2024 release.
According to reports, development kits have already been distributed to third-party developers in preparation for its launch next year. While detailed specifications are being kept under wraps, insiders suggest that the next-gen console will retain the portable mode feature, akin to the existing Nintendo Switch.
Also, Nintendo might use an LCD screen instead of OLED for its next console launch. This decision is aimed at cost-cutting, given the greater storage requirements for higher-quality games. Furthermore, the system is expected to maintain compatibility with physical media through cartridges.
While other details, including backward compatibility support for Switch games, remain uncertain, as "some third-party publishers" have reportedly voiced concerns that maintaining legacy support for Switch games could potentially impact the sales of next-generation titles.
Although Switch software sales are currently still highly profitable, Nintendo is widely anticipated to be on the brink of launching new hardware due to the ongoing slowdown in Switch hardware sales. VGC and Eurogamer's report also aligns with the statement made few months ago by Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo's President, asserting that the company has no plans to release a new console before March 2024.
