Set in the Bakumatsu (1853-1867) phase of Late Edo Period, players assume the role of Sakamoto Ryoma, who is caught in the midst of a Tosa coup d'état. Determined on finding the murderer who had killed his mentor, Ryoma takes on a hidden identity on the streets of Kyoto, and joins the Shinsengumi.
