[TGS2023] How a Remake should look like: Persona 3 Reload hands-on demo at Tokyo Game Show

Persona 3 marked my entry into the Persona universe, enchanting me with its engaging narrative, captivating art style, and satisfying combat system. Imagine how excited I was when I first learned about the upcoming remake, Persona 3 Reload (P3R), which promises improved visuals, refined user interface, and fresh gameplay elements designed to draw in newcomers while evoking nostalgia for fans of this iconic RPG.

At this year's Tokyo Game Show, amidst the bustling crowds, I not only had the opportunity to go hands-on with the much-anticipated Persona 5 Tactica but also got a brief taste of P3R through a special demo offered at the event. The demo presented me a choice between delving into a dungeon during the New Moon or the Full Moon phase. Without hesitation, I opted for the latter that offers tougher battles and an epic boss encounter.

I can't emphasize enough how deeply moved I was to witness one of my favorite games receiving a high-quality visual remake. The game's distinctive eerie, greenish atmosphere during the Dark Hour has been brilliantly remastered, adding a new layer of immersion that's truly remarkable. Looking back at my demo gameplay, on top of the improved graphics, the first Full Moon gameplay in P3R retained a similar camera perspective to the original game, evoking a profound sense of nostalgia for those who had played the original version.

In terms of battles, the game has introduced a fresh twist to its 1-More system. For those unfamiliar with the Persona series, successfully attacking an opponent's weakness will knock them down and grants an additional turn to the attacking character, no matter friend or foe. As part of the new features introduced in the remake, P3R has incorporated Persona 5's Baton Pass mechanic, this time called “Shift”. It enables a character to transfer his or her extra turn to another character after knocking down an enemy, opening up more opportunities for strategic maneuvers.

Another intriguing addition to the battle system is Theurgy, which are powerful abilities that can only be unleashed when a character's Theurgy gauge is completely charged via attacking, using skills, or taking various other actions. Interestingly, characters will reportedly charge their gauge at varying speeds through different actions, depending on their personality. Regrettably, I wasn't able to explore the Theurgy system in the demo. Nevertheless, it stands as a captivating new inclusion in the remake that I very much look forward to learn more about.

Judging from the demo provided on-site at the Tokyo Game Show 2023, the game indeed offers a profound sense of nostalgia with its extensively improved visuals and the addition of new battle mechanics. It manages to capture the essence of the original while delivering the excitement akin to a brand-new experience. Scheduled for release on February 2, 2024, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC, this remake is also set to unveil previously unseen facets of the in-game characters, delving deeply into their personal narratives with new scene. It promises a more comprehensive and immersive presentation of Persona 3's overall storyline, which I believe fans of the Persona series, especially the third game, wouldn’t want to miss out on.
