Marvel’s Wolverine will reportedly aim for a mature rating, with the game possibly launching as soon as autumn 2024.
According to Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb, the developing studio Insomniac Games is reportedly aiming for a “hard R” tone, as he shared presumed details on the development of the game during a livestream on Thursday (credit to VGC).
Grubb is known for his accurate inside information, such as the recent unveiling of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
He also mentioned that Wolverine in the game could be different from what we’ve seen in the cinemas, as the character was famously portrayed by Hugh Jackman.
“They'll avoid having any links or anything that evokes the Fox movies, they want it to stand on its own”, he said. The game might also be set during the time before Wolverine joined the X-Men.
Additionally, rather than being an open-world game in the vein of Insomniac’s Spider-Man series, Grubb claimed that the studio could go for a semi-open world gameplay similar to God of War: Ragnarok.
He also noted that although the game could be released as early as autumn 2024, the studio is “still very much talking about 2025”. It is understandable as releasing back-to-back triple A titles in two consecutive years is not an easy feat, with Spider-Man 2 expected to launch this upcoming autumn.
Both the Marvel's Wolverine and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 were announced during a PlayStation Showcase event back in September 2021. Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, the creative leads behind Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, were announced to be the directors of this upcoming Wolverine game.
