During the recent court hearing between Microsoft and the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC), new internal documents were disclosed, mentioning Microsoft's consideration of acquiring the game company Square Enix. Several reasons were listed as to why the acquisition should be considered:
- Enhancing Xbox's influence in the Asian market
- Acquiring the intellectual property (IP) of popular games under Square Enix
- Series such as Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest can contribute to the marketing of Xbox Game Pass and Project Scarlett (the codename for Xbox Series)
- Facilitating growth in the mobile market for Xbox and assisting in bringing more exclusive Game Pass products to mobile platforms
Although Microsoft has shown interest in Square Enix, there are currently no visible signs of an impending acquisition of the company. Furthermore, information disclosed in other documents suggests that Microsoft has also contemplated the acquisition of companies such as Sega, IOI, and Bungie.
