In 2021, local authorities in China implemented a new policy to prevent minors from becoming addicted to gaming. Under this policy, underage players are only allowed to play games from 8 pm to 9 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. However, it seems that this is still not the most stringent measure.
In view of the long-standing public attention about underage online gaming in China, during a recent interview, Li Yan, a representative of the National People's Congress, suggested a complete ban on providing online gaming services to individuals under the age of 18, indicating that it should be included in the Law on the Protection of Minors. She also called for cracking down on companies or platforms that provide online gaming services to minors and strengthening punishment measures. In addition, she suggested mandatory facial recognition for adult users to log in to games and even banning game products from displaying any advertisements. As for the refund policy for impulsive spending on online games by minors, Li Yan hopes to change the age limit from under 8 to under 18.
